Primordial Sound Meditation

At the RiverView Wellness Center for Well being we offer instruction in the Chopra Center’s Primordial Sound Meditation, a powerful meditation technique rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. Chopra Center co-founders Deepak Chopra and David Simon have revived this ancient practice of sound meditation and made it available in a format that is easy to learn.

When you learn Primordial Sound Meditation, you will receive a personal mantra. A mantra is a specific sound or vibration, which when repeated silently, helps you to enter deeper levels of awareness.  A Sanskrit term that translates as “vehicle of the mind”, a mantra truly is a vehicle that takes you into quieter, more peaceful levels of the mind.

The mantra you will receive is the vibration the universe was creating at the time and place of your birth, and it is calculated following Vedic mathematic formulas.

When you silently repeat your mantra in meditation, it creates a vibration that helps you slip into the space between your thoughts, into the complete silence that is sometimes referred to as “the gap”. Your mind is no longer caught up in its noisy internal chatter and is instead exposed to its own deepest nature: pure awareness.

As many studies show, a regular meditation practice offers numerous health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, and releasing stress and fatigue. In fact, meditating for half an hour provides more psychological rest than a full night’s sleep.

As you meditate on a regular basis, you will notice an increased sense of well-being as well as greater energy and creativity.

Research on Meditation

MEDITATION LOWERS CHOLESTEROL

A longitudinal study showed that cholesterol levels significantly decreased through meditation in hypercholsteolemic patients, compared to matched controls, over an eleven month period. (Journal of Human Stress, 5: 24-27, 1979)

MEDITATION LOWERS BUILDUP OF PLAQUE IN CORONARY ARTERIES

Recent studies show that meditation, along with diet and exercise, can reduce buildup of plaque in coronary arteries. Long term meditators experience 80% less heart disease and 55% less cancer than nonmeditators. (Psychosomatic Medicine 49 (1987): 493-507)

Practicing meditation may play an important role in controlling certain risk factors for heart disease…practice for 20 minutes a day has a positive, measurable effect reducing the build up of fatty deposits in arteries or atherosclerosis - just a small reduction could reduce the risk of heart attack by 11% and reduce the risk of stroke by 15%. (CNN, July 2000 referencing the March edition of the journal Stroke)

MEDITATION STRENGTHENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin reported that people newly trained in meditation have shown an increase in electrical activity in the left frontal part of the brain, an area associated with positive emotion and happiness. Meditators also showed a significant boos of immunity to the flu. (Article: Meditation “fools the brain’ in a threatening world, by R.J. Ignelzi, San Diego Union Tribune March 6, 2007)

MEDITATION REDUCES ADHD SYMPTOMS

78% of adults who completed an 8 week meditation study reported a reduction in total ADHD symptoms. On neurocognitive test performance, significant improvements were found on the measure of attentional conflict. (Mindfulness meditation training in adults and adolescents with ADHD. Journal of Attention Disorders, 11, 737-746)

 Benefits of Mediation

                       Stress?  (Fight or Flight)

Society has change much since more primitive times. Once our reaction to stress was a matter of “Fight” or “Flight”. Gone are the days when confrontation with a tiger, would either result in “Fight” or (run for your life) “Flight”.

However, in today’s world, the feelings of “Fight” or Flight are still absolutely present every time we are presented with a challenge, whether is is on an emotional, financial, or physical level. The heart rate increase, blood pressure rises, and muscles swell with blood anticipating the challenge, which obviously in today’s society is generally inappropriate.

Since you can’t run or fight what happens? We suppress the feelings and over time the body attacks itself because there is no way to expel the pent up energy. Without dissipating the feelings, continued unalleviated stress, can become the root of a myriad list of health concerns.

What to do?

For thousands of years, it has been known that the practice of mediation has countless values for relieving stress and balancing the body.

Research has scientifically proven that meditation is a safe and simple way to balance your physical, emotional, and mental state. . Today more and more doctors are promoting the benefits of meditation to elevate many stress related illnesses, rather than resorting to medication as a form of treatment.

Benefits of Meditation:
